For those of you who are unfamiliar with shot skis I weep for you. I pity you. But I am here to educate as well as entertain, so I will enlighten you. A shot ski is a device comprised of an old ski and several shot glasses. Mine has 4 shot glasses. The entire point of a shot ski is to get drunk with a lot of people. We already know that alcohol brings people together. The shot ski doubles down on this awesome phenomenon. The way it works is that you and three of your friends all take a position in front of one of the shot glasses. You raise the ski up to your mouths and down your shots all at the same time. The real magic behind a shotski is that it convinces people who normally wouldn’t want to take a shot to take one. Or two. Or three. Or really I can’t remember because last time I used it, I convinced the bouncer to let me take it into the bar with me. Which resulted in a night of free shots. I vaguely remember taking the ski out to the dance floor with me and spinning around like a helicopter. It was a good night.
Want to build your own? Depending on the number of tools you have at your disposal (aka your dudefest level) depends on how elaborate you can get.
Here’s a list of supplies you will need:
- One alpine ski
- Shot Glasses (3 or 4 depending upon the length of your ski)
- High Quality, high contact Velcro (optional)
If you’re like me and currently don’t own a drill or drill press, there is an easier route to take when building your own shotski. You simply remove the bindings off of the ski, clean it well and epoxy the shot glasses to the ski. Let it dry and resist the temptation to “see if its ready yet” for 24 hours. Examine your work. Usually more epoxy is better than less.
If you’ve got a lot of time, a steady hand and a whole garage of tools you can actually drill holes into the ski. You don’t have to drill very far down, just make sure that each of the holes ends up measuring the correct height so the shot glasses all sit at approximately the right height. Once you’ve drilled the holes, epoxy the Velcro square into the hole, and the other half onto the bottom of the shot glass. This allows the shot glasses to be removed, which makes them easier to clean and makes the whole thing easier to transport.
Go out and build your own. You won’t regret it and your dudefest level will rise a minimum of 3 points.
