Hofbräu Original Lager has earned a special place in my heart. It was the first adult beverage I indulged in after the Winter Storm "Nemo" dumped 2 feet of snow on my apartment and car. I lost my keys in that snow. Nemo was a bitch.
After an afternoon of struggle, heartache, digging out my car, and losing my keys in the process, my friends and I located the few eating and drinking establishments that had stayed open despite the storm. We decided on Matt Murphy's Pub, an awesome little gastro spot in Brookline Village, MA.
The first sip was magic. Hofbräu Original Lager is perfectly balanced in every sense of the word. It's light without being watery. It has flavor but is still a session beer. It has no flashy fragrant bouquet and it certainly won't come with fruit on the rim. It doesn't have the "YOU CALL THAT HOPS?" finish that microbrews are cooking up these days. It's beer, good beer, the way beer should be. It warms your soul on a winter evening and it cools you off on a summer day. It's beer.
Imagine if Bud Light wasn't shitty, and then make it better, like Bud Heavy Platinum. That's what we're dealing with here. A year later I found myself in a Beer Hall in Manhattan that had three beers on tap. Light, Dark and Stout. The "Light" was Hofbräu Original. I fell in love all over again. Hofbräu Original is not easy to find but if you are lucky enough to stumble an package store that stocks it, do your self a favor and give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
